OpenRemote Hardware

The Boss is written in java and as such can run on any platform with solid java support.  The Open Remote Box (ORB) is meant as a reference implementation to provide a runtime environment for the Boss.   This is the starting point for assembling hardware capable of deploying OpenRemote controller software. You can follow the links below for quick access to detailed instructions or keep reading through the frequently asked questions on this page.  These instructions are meant for DIY to assemble themselves, however if you are interested in pre-assembled solution in volume please contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find some frequently asked questions that will help you to understand the role of OpenRemote hardware reference implementation, OpenRemote Box and OpenRemote controller.

What is OpenRemote reference implementation?

OpenRemote defines a controller reference implementation that currently serves as a development kit for OpenRemote members. It is a complete controller implementation including hardware and software.

What is OpenRemote controller?

OpenRemote controller is the central piece of hardware and software for residential or commercial building that delegates the control tasks to hardware devices using different home and building automation protocols. It is also responsible for providing a user-friendly interface to OpenRemote console devices such as an iPhone.

More details on OpenRemote controller.

How can I build OpenRemote reference implementation?

We publish a hardware Bill of Materials for do-it-yourself home automation enthusiasts. The instructions can be used to assemble your own OpenRemote controller. We also provide full instructions on how to install software to the reference implementation. Eventually we plan on supplying a pre-configured and customized ISO distribution to ease the software installation steps.

Can I buy OpenRemote reference implementation?

If you are interested in a pre-built and supported reference implementation, please let us know. You can leave a note at the end of this page or contact us directly via email.

What software is used in OpenRemote reference implementation?

The OpenRemote controller software is based on a Java runtime and a Linux operating system. We provide the Java implementation layer and integration to native operating system services in C. OpenRemote controller software is designed to provide physical gateways and integrate with existing home and building automation protocols including infrared, serial, radio and powerline.

Which Linux distribution do you use in the reference implementation?

Current reference implementation uses Voyage Linux as the Linux distribution. It is a Debian derivative.

We plan on offering an optimized Linux distribution for our software and specific home automation use case in near future. Standard ISO images will be made available for download.

Can I use my own hardware or PC to deploy OpenRemote RI software?

Yes you can. We do maintain a list of alternative hardware we have used to deploy the OpenRemote controller software. In general, Debian derivatives should work with little effort. The hardware and Linux distribution should offer a solid Java 6 support.
