We publish a hardware bill of materials for do-it-yourself home automation enthusiasts. The instructions can be used to assemble your own OpenRemote controller. We also provide full instructions on how to install software to the reference implementation. Eventually we plan on supplying a pre-configured and customized ISO distribution to ease the software installation steps.

What software is used in OpenRemote reference implementation?
The OpenRemote controller software is based on a Java runtime and a Linux operating system. We provide the Java implementation layer and integration to native operating system services in C. OpenRemote controller software is designed to provide physical gateways and integrate with existing home and building automation protocols including infrared, serial, radio and powerline.
Which Linux distribution do you use in the reference implementation?
Current reference implementation uses Voyage Linux as the Linux distribution. It is a Debian derivative.
We plan on offering an optimized Linux distribution for our software and specific home automation use case in near future. Standard ISO images will be made available for download.
Can I use my own hardware or PC to deploy OpenRemote RI software?
Yes you can. We do maintain a list of alternative hardware we have used to deploy the OpenRemote controller software. In general, Debian derivatives should work with little effort. The hardware and Linux distribution should offer a solid Java 6 support.
