HA needs an open and future proof architecture, which handles the main problems of domotics :

- balkanization of the offering ( no standards ) - complexity - cost

KNX is not a real standard . Hager products do not interoperate easily with Merten products . KNX is complex to install . try ETS 3 , it is an awful experience !! Look at http://www.sirlan.com/en/tab-x.php , it is better !! KNX sensors are very expensive .

However, KNX is robust and works !!

I suggest to use 3 technologies to adress these issues

IPV6 from end to end ( 6lowpan from sensinode , http://www.sensinode.com/ )

xmpp to communicate with objects ( actuators , sensors ) look at http://www.openspime.org/what

OSGI to handle heterogeneous life cycle ( http://felix.apache.org/site/index.html )

A good start could be to have a look at the dog project, http://elite.polito.it/content/category/8/20/78/ or the homerun project ( http://code.google.com/p/homerun/ ).

An interesting ecosystem to play with is the z-wave one. Look at http://smart-home-blog.com/archives/1128 to get a linux taste of it.

I hope these comments will help .

This is not generally true, and there are a lot of installations to prove it. What problem did you have ?

While the stuff inter-operates at run-time I have found the configuration to be a proprietary mess, All vendor specific. The only standard is really runtime object sharing. It is good and it works but KNX is ultimately destined to be quickly superseded (10 years?).
