OpenRemote Controller is fast becoming our integration platform to existing HA technology. We've recently had people express interest in Crestron and INSTEON integration, we were already working on integrating X10 and plan to get into KNX soon.

We've created subprojects for the above integration work. If you're new here and interested in any of the below, please leave a note on this thread, or a comment directly on the project pages. Each project has assigned leads and they will help you get started and coordinate the work within the groups.

This should help new members find areas where they can offer help. We've also created a contribution page where we will periodically post tasks and TODO items where we are looking for help and resources. So keep checking out that page (or subscribe to its RSS feed).

Friends,

I am stoked on what you all are doing. I believe the Iphone and devices like it will replace all hand held devices. Home phone, remote controller camera, video camera,... and i am sure that it will eventually be a device that can be hooked to any host computer and that host has you whole personal computer in it.

I am an integrator and have been working with IRED ( http://www.filewell.com/iRed/ ) with IR TRANS
( http://www.irtrans.de/de/index.php )

It works well, but does not support page jumping, meaning when a button is pressed I cant tell it to send the iphone browser to another address.

I am happy to help with what little I know, IR & RS232 are the only things that I care to use at this point. I am happy to see all of the different languages that your monster will speak.

Hello Matt, thanks for joining and introducing yourself.

So you integrate stuff on mac only? How good is the UI on IRED, I browsed it and it seems interesting, too bad it is OSX only.

I have visited a high end house once and it was all IR communication with IR/Ethernet connecting the whole video room. It is funny, a good bit of the functionality can be achieved with IR/RS as a tremendous fraction of the cost.

How do you go about getting your RS codes installed? I mean what is the source of it? We are looking for a seed to start the Beehive database.

PS: do not be afraid of the markup language it is actually pretty cool, check out the help button.

This entire effort is great. HA has been too expensive for too long. I will support whenever possible.

I am a gadget guy and home AV is a hobby of mine. I have played with different ways to simplify my AV control. I programmed AMX for a short time so had there gear for a while. Not user friendly. They are still focused on commercial.

I currently use a global cache box (controlled over tcp/ip) to control all the AV devices both IR and RS-232 (logic done with lua). I use netremote on a PDA to send commands over WiFi. I love the global cache box but the weak link is the netremote only runs on windows. Crashes often requiring reboots. This solution is cheap ($50 for netremote and $140 for global cache) but not complete. I do not want windows to be in the equation. That is why I was excited to see the java on linux solution your using for a controller. I very familiar with the stability of linux from my day job.

I noticed the UI console will be http or Iphone based. This makes sense for whole home control but for AV control are there any thoughts on a standard hard button remote to use as remote? For example, controlling DVR on a touch screen can be a step back when it comes to ease of use. Or maybe a combo remote like control4 has?

Anyway, I look forward to seeing things develop.

Hello Bill,

Thanks for joining.

At the moment the focus is on HTTP interface for home control, and possibly native cocoa interface for iPhone.

However, that doesn't mean A/V control needs cannot be discussed. Always interesting to hear what people like/don't like and where they would like to see things develop.

G'day!

I'm a developer who has finished scouting for a great project to put some effort into. Right now I feel like a kid in a candy shop, and would like to see if there's something I could help out with. I have just about zero experience with home automation (but hoping to learn).

My main experience is in Event Driven Architectures (EDA) and build environments (maven, subversion, etc), with a strong showing for Java based HTTP interfaces.

With EDA, I've done work with Java Messaging Service and Complex Event Processing, which I saw mentioned in the Open Remote Controller design http://openremote.org/Software/Controller.

My work with HTTP interfaces includes jsp, servlet, ICEfaces, webservices, and a few others. Just a hint of GWT.

Any advice or guidance? Hoping to learn something new.

Hey Colin,

Welcome to OpenRemote.

If your interest lies in the web interface then the GWT based manager applications might be the right place. We are hoping to have something to share in that area soon.

On the controller side there's some skeleton code in https://openremote.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/openremote/branches/NativeSerial. A lot of it is just putting some framework around where the eventual implementations should be. If there's any particular area that would appeal to you there, let us know.
