So, I spend 8.5 hours standing outside of an Apple store to get my iPhone 3G (I did not even get one -- they refused to take my $$$ due to a family plan / number porting issue, but I did get one for my wife).
One the first day of the app store launch, the app that makes the most buzz is Apple's free Remote Control app. As expected, it allows you to control iTunes and Apple TV powered devices over WIFI. I think a Windows Media Player remote control is just around the corner as well.
The application is very polished and very well done. It really sets high expectations for future remote control apps for the iPhone! We have to at least match that UI quality! Less than a day after its release, it already got more than 340 user reviews on Apple's app store site, and is rated at 4.5/5. Some related links:

I upgraded my older iPhone with the new 2.0 firmware and 'Remote' worked instantly/flawlessly with my AppleTV. In fact, it does a lot more than I would have expected. Totally sweet, totally recommended. All I need to be button-remote free is an iPhone WIFI-IR bridge to turn the TV/DVD on/off and for volume/source control.
That's what OpenRemote is for. ;)
Seriously though, this gives me an idea. We should reverse engineer the control protocol so we can control Apple TVs and iTunes via TCP. I just did a quick dump and it just looks like a web service that isn't encrypted. The trick will be how to mimic the pairing in OpenRemote Controller.
